Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Ch Muhammad Barjees Tahir has shown his dissatisfaction over the land acquisition process of Diamer Bhasha Dam. He was chairing a high level meeting regarding the land acquisition for strategically important Diamer Bhasha Dam. Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan, representative of WAPDA, Deputy Commissioner Chillas also attended the meeting. Minister was aided by Shahidullah Baig Federal Secretary and Tahir Raza Naqvi Additional Secretary Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Division. Federal Minister said that Diamer Bhasha Dam was not only vital for ongoing energy crisis but also important for water storage and food security of the country. Country was facing acute crisis of energy as well as water resources were receding at a fast pace, he added. It was found that it was because of the lack of interest of WAPDA that land acquisition process was not completed. Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan and Deputy Commissioner Chillas informed Federal Minister about the measures taken by GB government in this regard. Federal Minister constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Secretary Water and Power to make recommendation for early land requisition of already delayed dam. Other members of committee included Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan and Chairman WAPDA. This committee would come up with its recommendations within 15 days.
Meeting was informed that it was due to the negligence of WAPDA that Chillas hospital, residential colonies, cadet college, technical colleges and schools were not build so far which resulted in distrust among the residents of the area. Federal Minister took serious notice of such attitude from WAPDA and directed WAPDA representative to fulfill legitimate demands of the people as early as possible. Federal Minister directed the Gilgtit-Baltistan Government to expedite the process of payment to the landowners so that construction work on this important project could be started
